In a recent conversation with a family member, I was reminded of the challenge of dealing with emotions. Most of us have inner thoughts at one time or another that leads us to wonder, "is what I'm experiencing normal?" You see, emotions are a biological response to events and thoughts in our daily lives. Emotions are based in the amygdala in our brains and can be completely involuntary. As such, emotions are neither good nor bad, right nor wrong. They are pleasant and unpleasant, extremely unpleasant at times. It is how we express our emotions and how we manage them that can create disruptive life experiences.
Cognitive behavioral techniques can assist in management of emotions by allowing you to examine the thought-feeling-behavior pattern. It is possible to change to more healthy thoughts to increase more pleasant emotions. It is also possible to address behavior in response to thoughts and emotions to improve your understanding of yourself and others. Understanding these patterns can begin a basis for healing in a variety of situations. If you are struggling, seek help because life doesn't have to be a constant struggle.
